Fueling The Body

Nutrition has been a major component of my wellness journey.  As a result of being an overweight child and teenager, I truly understand the importance of properly feeding the body.  I lost fifty pounds when I was 17 years old and vowed never to be that heavy again.  Ultimately, I needed to change my eating habits and exercise a lot more.  So the journey began.  Now at 52 I'm more nutrition conscious than ever.

I've practically eliminated all processed and refined carbs from my diet.  I have to be honest at times I do cheat a bit around the holidays or when I have a craving, but I keep it all in check.  No worries. Most mornings I'll have egg whites for breakfast, salad and a protein for lunch and always two veggies with fish or chicken with dinner.  Sometimes I'll have some quinoa as well which is another great source of protein.

Here's a terrific salad I had for lunch at west-bourne in Soho the other day.

I've eliminated diet soda, artificial sweeteners and all processed foods from my diet.  I try to eliminate as much dairy as possible.  So almond milk is the milk of choice.  I do love cheese and this is my biggest downfall, but that's ok.  I treat it as a rare treat and I make sure to truly enjoy it when I have it, but again I keep it in check.  I learned a lot about nutrition when I went to the The Ranch in Malibu.  It's a complete wellness vacation centered around fitness, nutrition and mindfulness.  I'll write more about my Ranch experiences in another post, but this is where I learned about eliminating so many foods from my diet.  The Ranch menu was vegan and I haven't kept to that, but took a lot of excellent habits back home with me.

There is so much to write about nutrition, but I'm going to leave it here for now.  Make sure you get your greens in and try your best at eliminating all processed foods and refined sugars from your diet.  Most importantly, don't drive yourself crazy.  Implement small changes to your diet bit by bit.
